Why sleep can change in older children

Sleep problems in older children often catch parents off guard. After years of sleeping well a child may suddenly struggle with bedtime night waking or early mornings. “Older child sleep problems” and “school age child waking at night” are common searches because parents feel unsure how to respond.

As children grow their emotional world expands. School social dynamics, academic pressure and increased awareness of the world can all impact sleep. Older children may carry worries they cannot yet articulate. At night when the world quiets these worries surface.
