Why Your Child Falls Asleep Easily But Wakes All Night
Falling asleep versus staying asleep
Many parents are confused when bedtime feels easy but the night is full of wakings. “Child wakes every hour” and “frequent night waking child” are common searches because this pattern is exhausting and confusing. Parents often wonder if they are missing something or if their child lacks sleep skills.
Falling asleep and staying asleep are two different processes. Falling asleep is supported by sleep pressure and routine. Staying asleep requires nervous system stability across sleep cycles. Children naturally move through light sleep multiple times a night. Most briefly stir and resettle without waking fully.
Night waking and the nervous system
When a child’s nervous system is sensitive they may fully wake during these transitions. Stress, emotional load, sensory sensitivity and daytime dysregulation can all increase night waking. This does not mean the child is doing something wrong or needs to be trained out of waking.
Night waking is communication. A child may need reassurance, connection or help settling their body back into rest. Ignoring these needs often increases cortisol which fragments sleep further. Responsive support helps the nervous system learn that transitions are safe.
